Want to find out more about abortion pills?

Abortion pills are a safe & effective way to have an abortion.

They can be taken in the privacy of your own home, or in a safe and comfortable place that works for you, at a time that works for you.

They also allow you to have control over the process.

Abortion pills typically refer to two medications taken in sequence; mifepristone and misoprostol. Alternatively in many places in the world, misoprostol-only medication abortion is used if / when mifepristone is not available.

Self-Management of Abortion Across the Globe

In many parts of the world, abortion pills can be bought over the counter at a pharmacist. There are networks of community health workers, activists and ‘abortion companions’ or doulas who have the skills and expertise to support people with medication abortions.

These people are recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as part of the safe abortion workforce, alongside nurses, midwives and doctors. You can find more WHO information about self-management of abortion here.

A number of international feminist organisations like Women on Web and Women Help Women also support people with information about abortion options and access to abortion pills online.

The two infographics above are examples of resources provided by Red Necesito Abortar - a Mexico-based organisation supporting people worldwide with safe autonomous abortion care.

Self-Management of Abortion in Australia?

In Australia, abortion care is far more regulated than most parts of the world. Autonomous self-management options are not yet available through Australia’s healthcare system or locally available outside it (for now).

There is only one abortion pill medication on the Australian market - MS 2 Step - and it can only be prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Abortion pills can be prescribed by all GPs, as well as nurses and midwives in some states and territories. You can find more information about abortion services in Australia here.
